October is Mystery Month at the Library

The library is celebrating all things mystery this October!

The library’s new Book Ends book club will discuss the mystery Big Little Lies on Mon-day, Oct. 3. Family Fun Night on Monday, Oct. 17 will feature a mystery theme, and on Tuesday, Oct. 18, Richard Caplan will give a fascinating presentation on “Sherlock Holmes in Turn-of-the-Century Britain”. Caplan is an authority on Sherlock Holmes, recent-ly publishing a book about the famous detective. This presentation is sponsored by Humanities Iowa, which offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities. The presentation is free and open to the pub-lic. If you are a person with a disability who requires special assistance, please call the library in advance at (319) 668-1195.

In addition, the library is holding a Ghost Group Forum on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Please join the discussion if you are interested in the topic or have paranormal encounters you’d like to share. Members of the Johnson County Paranormal Team will be here to lead the discussion and answer questions. Registration is encouraged for planning purposes, but not required. For more information or to register, contact Barb at bdavis@williamsburgiowa.org.

Cook the Book Adds Evening Chapter

For those who haven’t been able to attend the current Cook the Book meetings which are held at WPL on the third Wednesday afternoon of each month, we will be adding an evening chapter on the fourth Monday from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

The Cook the Book afternoon program started in Oct. 2015 and has become one of the library’s most popular events. Patrons choose recipes from pre-selected cookbooks at the library and bring their chosen items to share with the group during the program. Participants are able to taste everyone’s offerings and dis-cuss the recipes. Each month’s recipes have a theme. September’s theme is “Harvest”, and the meetings will be held Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 12:00-1:15 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 26 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. All are welcome to join; just stop in and choose a recipe to get started!

NEW Book Club at the library: Book Ends

Where the book ends, the discussion begins at Williamsburg Public Library. A new adult book club will meet the first Monday of every month at 6:30pm by the library fireplace. The first book is Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty.

The mystery follows three mothers, each at a cross-roads, and their involvement in a riot at a school trivia night that leaves one parent dead. Was the death accidental, or premeditated? HBO will air the story as a miniseries starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in 2017.

Come to the library for a copy of the book and join us on Oct. 3 for the discussion. For more information contact Barb at bdavis@williamsburgiowa.org.
